Long time no see 久しぶりですね！

Well I finally found something I’d like to write about. Its a Podcast. for learning Hindi. And, why would I like to do that? Good question.

The other day at Namaste India, I met a Japanese female who spoke pretty fluent Hindi for some reason! Apparently she’s studied in India for one whole year. Considering the improvement in my Japanese skills over the first year, I’d say yes, speaking can be managed in that period of time. But where Hindi has a limited number of alphabets, Japanese has like a zillion kanjis! Not to forget the dialects, slang, the onomatopoeia, and so on. However I gotta admit, its never been a pain. Absolute fun learning the language. Thanks to Alex’s podcast, its been an amazing ride over the last three years.

Coming back to the point, after talking to this female, I felt like checking out if there were any Podcasts for that purpose. Among other textbook style podcasts was one titled ‘The Learn Hindi from Bollywood Movies Podcast’

Gave it a try, and the first phrase I learn, ‘Main iska khoon pi jaunga’ (I’ll drink his blood! )

Well, Its pretty common for 80’s bollywood movies to have situations where such things ‘need to be said’

Seems this guy, Arun Krishnan, has been podcasting weekly since 2006. Even if you are an Indian with MA in Hindi, I’m very much sure you’ll enjoy this podcast….Unless you hate Bollywood Movies But who does ?? I wonder if theres an an episode covering the dialogues of Gunda

Commuting – the best part of my day

Finally moved into this small new place !

Its so small …. anyway I don’t wanna start complaining now. This was supposed to be a happy post

Compared to the earlier one, my new dorm is at a now a whole 3km away from work! The earlier one was so near, I could be in my seat within 10 minutes of waking up! Not that I ever tried doing that

Anyway, its been one week of commuting, have had surprisingly wonderful weather for the entire week. Used the car just for a day, and till it gets freakin cold I’m gonna stick to my mountain bike for a while.

Caught this wonderful sunset on my first evening in the new place. Wish to see more of these in the future ^^

Anyway, coming back to the main subject, the past few days, commuting to work has been a real pleasure. Day before yesterday, I attached my camera to my bike and shot this video. Should give a nice idea how rural
japan (Inaka/田舎) looks like. But seriously, perfect blue sky, with not a single cloud, this happens one once or twice a year.

this was taken on my new fujifilm F70EXR.

BTW, I did tweak this a little bit in iMovie ‘09. Not much though, just 5 minutes worth on editing. The rendering and uploading part did take a lot more! Will upload this to Vimeo later. Just wanna check the video quality.

Someday, I have to do this with Tokina 11-16 f2.8 on my 5D Mark II. Only problem is the camera costs a little more than 10 times my bike, and I need to find some good way to fix it to the bike. The added weight is surely gonna make it a slower ride

Finally, I’d like to add that my inspiration for this video was this one, shot by Sam from daily dose of imagery. Amazing blog !

Testing the Canon 5D Mark II with a super wide angle lens while biking on King street and Yonge street in Toronto. Unfortunately it started raining and a raindrop on my wide lens ruined the second half of the shot.
This was shot a few weeks ago and was before Canon release the Manual Exposure firmware. It’ll be interesting to test different shutter speeds for this now.

Line tracing robot

Back in college days, made this stupid Line tracing robot . Th event was Vishwatronix ‘08.

Most of it was junk though. A Tiffin box, Stepper Motors from Juna Bazar (Pune), and some Toy wheels.

I remember we were very keen on fixing Blue LEDs in it.

While making this, we forgot that it was a ‘Race’. Rather than speed, concentrated more on the accuracy.

However, Vishwatronix being a home event for our college, we did manage to convince the judges to give us the second prize.

Damn, I need to do more of this stuff ! College was fun. Most of it.

Project partners in this were Pushkar Sambhoos and Mihir Wagh. Anybody else I’m forgetting here ?

that reminds me, its 2009!

Honey I shrunk the room !

My new dorm room at Yuko Ryou (悠高寮). Small, Smelly n Sad

After coming to Japan, this is the first time I’ll be living in such a small space.

To add to the woes, this new dorm does not have a shower room, it has the traditional Japanese Ofuro (お風呂).

I’m not exactly against the culture, but excuse me, I don’t wanna see all my male friends naked, everyday!

Onsens (温泉) are alright, theres lots of natural beauty around to enjoy, but the dorm お風呂 sucks.

Thank god I am short-sighted.

Chitose Hajime / 元ちとせ

I’ve got something on my mind, and I HAVE to write it down. I can’t believe that I can find time and energy to blog about music on such a busy day! But, I shall continue writing on this tiny iPhone keyboard as I walk home…

Today’s subject, Chitose Hajime (元ちとせ). She is JPOP singer with a distinctive style. Ever heard of Falsetto Effects ?

She is gifted with a one in a million voice (Come to think of it, aren’t most good singers? Hmm maybe, I’ll just continue writing…) As far a I know, she can do some hard core classical okinawan music, which I cannot stand, even for a minute. But other than that she also does some pop music too, which is very easy on the ears. Actually studies show that her voice has a relaxing effect. She can belch out frequencies that very few humans can.
Many of you, actually most non-Japanese people, may find her voice annoying to a certain extent. Frankly I don’t care. Coz I absolutely love it!

Where/When did I discover her ?

Once, for a change, I was watching Japaneeez TV on a Sunday evening, when I saw 3 females singing the same song. Two of the faces were familiar. The third one…no. Actually, it was her voice that struck me more than her face. Had never heard a human being singing in that kinda voice. This was new stuff.

However, with my toota phoota Japanese, I did manage to google her. It was this video and the other two females are Ayaka (絢香) and Aoyama Thelma (青山テルマ). Ayaka too has a very good voice, but it’s getting a bit too repetitive now. Thelma…. well she made one good song. And she made it again. That’s it! Frankly, in my opinion, making her sing on the same stage as Chitose Hajime is an insult.

I’d also like to mention, the main reason for writing this post. In the last few months I haven’t been listening a lot of Chitose, but last night, just before falling asleep, I came across this sweet voice. Her name is Kizuki Minami (城南海). Since morning I’ve heard her new single at least a 100 times over. Seriously.

Hajime Chitose seems to have got new competition now ! This one too comes from Amami Shima. Its so small they might actually be relatives.

I’d also like to mention some more other artists in the same genre.

①　BEGIN (ビギン)

A absolutely amazing band from Okinawa. You can listen to their latet single here. They do deserve a blog post of their own. Here are two more songs by them.

(PS: ↑ this is one song I can sing confidently in Karaoke (Kaareeokee) )

② Rimi Natsukawa (夏川りみ)

I don’t know a lot about her. Here’s one song by her.

Can’t recollect of any more.

I know there are still many more people I still have to discover. But no regrets. Life if full of surprises. And I like it that way.

A few days ago, I was introduced to this music show on a friend’s blog. After being out of India for almost 4 years now, I admit that I have not been listening to a lot of Indian/Pakistani music. And I damn well miss it

Japan Earthquake Warning System

Good Morning !

Seems like there was a big quake in Shizuoka prefecture this morning (the land of Mt. Fuji). Anyway I was sleeping like a log. And, trust me, waking up to an earthquake is not a pleasant experience. I’ve had the pleasure, many times over.

This morning I woke up to the scary announcement from the city hall. all what they wanted to say was, there was an earthquake sometime ago. Listen to the news !

When I moved to Japan, I always wondered about this small Hitachi Radio kept in the corridors of my dorm. No one ever heard any music on it Until one day it sprung to life with a scary announcement. Actually, all of em start making the same announcement unanimously. Trust me, if u don’t understand the shitty Japanese, it scares the hell out of you.

Here’s the announcement I recorded earlier this morning. Even if u don’t get the meaning, ain’t that scary ? Kinda reminds me of Dharma Initiative from LOST.
